Drop zones: A lifesaver for busy moms

Between school, soccer practice and church activities, the back entryway to a home can become cluttered in a heartbeat. The last thing busy moms need is to be stressed out the moment they open the door.

No matter what your entrance looks like, there are solutions that can make it better. Here’s how to create a functional drop zone to turn the chaos into calm.

1. Figure out how to best utilize the space. If you have a flat counter, that’s ideal for backpacks, lunch boxes and other kid debris. If you don’t, find the best spot for the backpacks and other containers for the rest: milk crates, stackable drawers and bins are all excellent options.

2. Be clear about what can live in the space. I consider entryways to be prime real estate, so only things that are used every day can stay there.

3.  Command hooks are a lifesaver. I don’t recommend them for backpacks, but they’re great for all manner of other items – dog leashes, ID badges, keys etc.

4. Mesh is your friend. We all sweat pretty profusely in Texas, so have a bin that can let stinky clothes breathe.

5. If you have room, create a charging station. That way, you don’t have to worry about charging devices during the morning rush.

6. Have a designated bin for outgoing items – library books, stuff your kids’ friends left, Amazon returns, etc.

7. Once you have the system set up, explain to your kids how important it is that the space be kept orderly. If you have to, use guilt as a motivator lol.

8. Once a month, clear out the inevitable crap that doesn’t belong there. ☺
